About Office AutomationMost advanced users of the Microsoft® "Office" will be familiar with using certain tools to speed up their work - with "Mail Merge" and the "Macro Recorder" being amongst the favourites. Unknown to many though, is the fact that each of the "Office" applications actually incorporates Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) - making the full power of each of the applications available to software developers, such as WyeTec. VBA can thus be used to extend or alter the behaviour of Word, or Excel, or to integrate them with (or control them from) other applications. Automation in practiceTwo recent WyeTec projects have involved automating Microsoft® "Word" by controlling it through its programmatic interface from a bespoke software application. The National Trade Network database system exports a daily report as a Word document. This feature was required as the business owners wished the reports to be in a format they could edit and amend easily in a package they were familiar with. more... Due to be launched shortly, a series of interactive, on-line, personalised books using a web site that features a back-end system to automatically generate customised versions of childrens' books, populating each book with details of the child's name, the town they live in, and handling all the gender-specific (he/she, his/hers...) aspects of the text. Details of this exciting project will be published on our home page in the near future. Taking VBA a step further
It is also possible to embed VBA in your own applications - making your own product(s) customisable by
your customers. WyeTec engineers have used this technique with great success to develop a fully programmable
industrial inspection system combining image processing software, sample manipulation and a user customisable
visual interface. |
